Éco Entreprises Québec

Bin Impact: a new website to promote proper sorting habits

Éco-Entreprise Québec

Context

Founded in 2005, Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) is a private, non-profit organization that represents producers of containers, packaging, and printed matter in fulfilling their financial responsibility for curbside recycling. Since 2022, ÉEQ has also been responsible for managing and funding the curbside recycling system across the province of Quebec.

To inform, raise awareness, and educate citizens on proper sorting practices for containers, packaging, and printed materials, ÉEQ called on our expertise to lead the design of the new website for its Bin Impact initiative (binimpact.ca), which is expected to evolve over time.

Mandate

We pursued several objectives for the first phase of this mandate, which unfolded over the course of a few months:

  • Design a responsive website with a Mobile-First approach;
  • Implement an innovative and sustainable digital platform using robust and flexible technologies to support the site's gradual evolution;
  • Provide an optimal user experience;
  • Highlight best practices for properly recovering and sorting containers, packaging, and printed materials;
  • Create a bilingual site that adheres to web accessibility best practices and the highest industry security standards;
  • Position Bin Impact as the new go-to reference for raising awareness, educating, and informing the public about recycling and proper sorting habits.

Achievements

Technology

An effective and agile website starts with a modern, powerful, and flexible content management system (CMS). We began by selecting the most suitable CMS for binimpact.ca.

After a thorough analysis, we ultimately chose Craft—a flexible, scalable, open-source CMS that is user-friendly and features an intuitive interface to simplify content management. It also offers templates, tags, and dynamic content structures that can be tailored to the user's needs and profile. Our technical team also carried out technological alignment activities with ÉEQ’s IT department to ensure proper integration of the selected solution, and took responsibility for hosting the website.

UX/UI Design

The Bin Impact website is expected to evolve over the coming years, with many new content pages added over time. That's why our UX team carried out a series of user research studies to prepare a second-level navigational menu, along with the entire structure that will allow the site to grow in an intuitive and efficient way.

Our UI designers provided all the required digital assets for the website's various screen layouts. They also developed both basic and custom page templates equipped with reusable components and features to streamline integration while staying aligned with the brand’s visual identity.

SEO and Content Production

No website design or redesign would be complete without a strong Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy. Our SEO team was brought into the project early on to meet several key objectives:

  • Analyze user search intent;
  • Develop a technical recommendations guide outlining the SEO criteria to be followed for each template and site feature;
  • Create a writing guide focused on optimized content production;
  • Ensure all SEO requirements were implemented and that the site contained no indexing errors;
  • Perform SEO quality control both before and after the site’s launch;
  • Support the client throughout the entire development and integration phase.

Digital Analytics

Analyzing search intent is only part of the picture—understanding overall traffic and user behavior is equally important for optimizing the website as a whole. To achieve this, we developed the complete digital analytics strategy for Bin Impact and created a detailed implementation guide to support its rollout.

We also configured all data measurement platforms and performed full quality assurance for the analytics setup. As with SEO, our digital analytics team worked closely with the Bin Impact team throughout the entire development and integration of the site.

Development and integration

Once the solution was defined, we moved on to the programming phase, developing the entire system as follows:

  • Front-end: We developed the user interfaces/screens and carried out the HTML integration of these interfaces within the content management system.
  • Back-end: We implemented APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), as well as system and administration components.

We then proceeded with the installation and configuration of all project components—including the CMS, database, search engine, cookie management tool, and more—while also integrating all SEO and digital analytics requirements into the platform.

A website with a positive impact on the curbside recycling system

Online since January 11, 2024, binimpact.ca offers an optimal user experience to citizens, who can easily access content to learn about and stay informed on recycling practices. With the support of our expertise, Éco Entreprises Québec now benefits from a high-value website that informs and raises public awareness about proper sorting habits for containers, packaging, and printed materials.

This new initiative from Éco Entreprises Québec is designed to grow and evolve over time—and we’ll be there to support our client through the next stages of its development!
